Waterloo Square

Street guide, Bognor Regis

Waterloo Square is one of the few surviving elements of Sir Richard Hotham's original vision for Bognor as a fashionable Georgian resort. The square is located close to the seafront and comprises a group of late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century buildings arranged around a central garden. The architecture is restrained Georgian, with rendered facades, sash windows, and modest classical detailing. The square gives an indication of what Hotham intended for his new resort, even though much of his wider plan was never completed or has since been demolished. Waterloo Square is within the Bognor Regis Conservation Area and the buildings are locally listed. The square is primarily residential, and its proximity to the Esplanade and the beach makes it a distinctive address. The central garden adds a note of calm to this part of the town centre.
