Town Centre Regeneration Projects
2010s
A series of regeneration projects were proposed and partially implemented for Bognor Regis town centre during the 2010s, driven by Arun District Council and supported by various government and lottery funding streams. The projects aimed to improve the public realm, attract private investment, and address the decline in high street retail that had affected Bognor in common with many other English towns. Proposals included improvements to the pedestrianised area, new wayfinding signage, better connections between the railway station and the seafront, and investment in key sites that had been underused or derelict for years. Some projects were completed, including streetscape improvements, shop front enhancement grants, and the restoration of the Picturedrome on Canada Grove. Others, including more ambitious schemes for the Esplanade and the area around the former pier, remained at the proposal or early planning stage. The regeneration effort reflected a recognition that Bognor's town centre needed sustained investment to compete with out-of-town retail parks, online shopping, and the draw of larger centres like Chichester and Worthing. Progress was incremental rather than transformative, and the town centre in the mid-2020s still shows the effects of decades of underinvestment alongside pockets of genuine improvement and renewed commercial activity.
