Rocks Festival Begins

2014

The Rocks Festival, later known as Bognor Rocks, was launched in 2014 as an annual music and arts festival on the seafront. The festival featured live music from local and touring bands across multiple stages, food and drink stalls from local producers, art installations, and family activities, all staged along the Esplanade and the beach. The event was conceived as part of the broader effort to revitalise the Bognor seafront and attract visitors outside the traditional peak summer weeks. The festival drew several thousand visitors in its early years and helped to shift the public perception of Bognor from a declining seaside resort to a town with contemporary energy and cultural ambition. The Rocks branding was also used for wider town centre and seafront improvement works, including murals, public art commissions, and an events programme that extended beyond the festival weekend itself. The festival operated on a modest budget compared to larger south coast music festivals, but its location on the beach and promenade gave it a distinctive, relaxed setting that larger venues could not replicate. The event demonstrated that Bognor could stage a credible arts and music programme, drawing visitors who might not otherwise have considered the town as a destination for anything other than a traditional seaside day out.
