Bognor Regis Pier (remains)
Historic Site, Bognor Regis
The original Bognor Regis Pier was built in 1865 and extended to 1,000 feet. The pier was damaged by storms on multiple occasions and was never fully rebuilt after a severe storm in 1999. The stumps of the pier structure are visible at low tide, a ghostly reminder of the town's Victorian resort ambitions. The landward end of the pier site is now used as the launch platform for the annual International Birdman Rally, in which competitors in homemade flying machines launch themselves from the pier into the sea. The pier site remains a focal point on the Esplanade.
