Aldwick is a residential village immediately west of Bognor Regis, technically a separate parish but now continuous with the town's built-up area. It has its own shops on Aldwick Road, its own parish church of St Richard, and a distinct identity that residents maintain firmly. The housing is a mix of inter-war bungalows, post-war estates, and some larger detached properties, particularly towards the coast. Aldwick Beach is a quiet shingle stretch, less busy than the main Bognor seafront and favoured by local residents who prefer the peace. The area around Craigweil, towards the coast between Aldwick and Bognor, carries royal associations: it was at Craigweil House that King George V convalesced in 1929, the visit that led directly to the granting of the Regis suffix. Craigweil House itself was demolished in the 1930s and the site redeveloped for housing, but the name persists in the Craigweil estate and surrounding streets. Aldwick has its own community feel, with a village hall, local clubs, and a sense of separateness from Bognor that goes beyond mere geography. The coast road runs through, connecting westward towards Pagham. Property prices in Aldwick tend to be slightly higher than in central Bognor, reflecting the quieter residential character and the proximity to the beach without the bustle of the main resort. Several roads run south from Aldwick Road to the coast, each ending at the beach with small access points between the houses. The parish council operates independently from Arun District Council on local matters, and the village holds its own community events throughout the year, reinforcing the separate identity that Aldwick residents value.
